Does TikTok Advertising Work for Small Business?

TikTok advertising can work for a small business that sells something visual, appeal to people under 45, and can film simple vertical video. It works poorly for firms that need people searching for them right now, or sell high-value B2B services. It is a discovery channel, so the question is whether your product is the kind people buy after seeing it.

If you can say yes to two of those three conditions, a small test is worth the money. If not, spend it on Google first.

Which small businesses does TikTok advertising suit?

The best matches sell things that look good in 20 seconds. Hairdressers and barbers, beauty and aesthetics, restaurants and cafes, gyms, fitness classes, independent shops, food makers, events, tutoring, and anything with a before and after.

Picture a Leeds street food stall launching a new menu. A 15-second clip of the cheese pull, shown to people within ten miles of the Corn Exchange, is a good ad. A commercial insurance broker’s talking-head video is a hard sell.

Audience matters too. TikTok’s users skew younger, though the age range has widened, so check your own customer profile rather than assuming. If most of your customers are over 55, test Meta first.

Does TikTok advertising work for a small business with local customers?

Yes, with limits. TikTok lets you target by location, including regions and, in some cases, a radius around a place, but the targeting is less precise than Google’s, and people on TikTok are not searching for a plumber.

That shapes the offer. A boiler service does not fit. A new gym opening, a taster session or a limited run of something does, because impulse matters. Local businesses with an event, a launch or an offer that has a deadline get the most from it.

For a plain cost-per-enquiry answer on urgent services, search advertising still wins, as the Google Ads troubleshooting guide explains.

What does TikTok advertising cost in the UK?

Typical UK costs, as a rough guide and not a quote: CPMs of around £4 to £10, cost per click of roughly 30p to £1.20 and a cost per lead of £5 to £30 for consumer offers. TikTok has often asked for higher minimum daily budgets than Meta, so check what Ads Manager requires at the time you set up.

The media cost is only part. Good creative costs time or money: a phone and an afternoon if you do it yourself, or £200 to £800 for a creator or editor to produce a batch. Many small firms find creative is the bigger bill than the ad spend.

Compare that with the cost of Facebook ads in the UK, which are usually easier to land a first lead on.

What kind of creative does TikTok need?

Vertical video, full screen, 9:16, ideally 15 to 30 seconds. The first two seconds decide everything, so lead with the action or the result, not a logo.

It has to look like TikTok. Handheld, real voice, on-screen captions, trending sound where licensing allows. Polished TV-style adverts get scrolled past. A barber filming a fade in real time with a caption “£18, no appointment needed on Tuesdays” tends to do better than a studio shoot.

Make three to five versions with different hooks. Keep each one a single idea. And end with a clear next step, such as “tap to book”.

How can you test TikTok ads cheaply?

Set a hard cap before you start. A reasonable test is around £15 to £20 a day for 14 days, so roughly £210 to £280, with three or four creatives in one ad group, and one goal. Install the TikTok Pixel first and make sure your booking form or button is tracked, as covered in our conversion tracking guide.

Decide your pass mark in advance. For example, a cost per enquiry under £15 and at least 10 enquiries. If you meet it, keep going and add budget slowly. If you get cheap clicks but no enquiries, the problem is the offer or the landing page, not the platform. If you get neither, stop.

Look at the comments too. People will tell you what is confusing, sometimes bluntly, and that is free research.

How is TikTok different from Facebook and Instagram for advertisers?

On Meta, people mostly see ads among posts from friends and brands they chose. On TikTok, the feed is driven by the algorithm, so an ad sits among strangers’ videos and has to earn attention instantly. That favours entertaining, quick content and punishes anything that feels like an advert.

Practically, it means you refresh creative more often and expect lower intent. You will see more views and cheaper clicks, and fewer people ready to buy this minute. Plan for a nurture step, such as a follow-up text or a retargeting ad, so a warm viewer does not vanish.

One more detail a generic guide skips. Read the comments on your own ad every day for the first week. They flag misleading claims, confusing prices and missing opening hours before a complaint reaches you.

Finally, give your landing page the same attention as the ad. Most TikTok visitors arrive on a phone, mid-scroll, so the page must load quickly and show the offer in the first screen. A booking link that opens a slow desktop-style site wastes the cheap click you just paid for.

When should you skip TikTok advertising?

Skip it if you cannot produce video, since a still image rarely cuts it. Skip it if your customers are urgent buyers searching for a fix. Skip it if you need tight postcode-level reach. Skip it if the average sale is large and slow, such as an £8,000 kitchen, where Google and Meta get you closer to ready buyers, and where LinkedIn can suit B2B.

And skip it if you have not got a working website and tracking. No channel fixes that.

Spreading budget thinly never helps either. Our guide on Google Ads budgets for small businesses may tell you the first place your money should go. When you are ready, our TikTok advertising service covers set-up, creative direction and reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok advertising worth it for a small business?

Only if you sell something visual to a younger audience and can make decent video. Otherwise, no.

Do I need a TikTok account with followers to advertise?

No. You can run ads from an advertiser account without an organic following, though a profile that looks alive helps people trust the ad.

Is TikTok cheaper than Facebook?

Often cheaper per impression and sometimes per click, but not always per customer. Test both on the same offer before you decide. Do not assume.

How long until TikTok ads show results?

Early data in days. A fair verdict takes two to four weeks, because the platform needs conversions to learn from, and creative fatigue sets in fast, so plan to refresh ads every couple of weeks.

Can I just post organic videos instead?

You can, and it costs nothing but time. The catch is that reach is unpredictable, so a few pounds of paid support behind your best video can turn a lucky hit into something steady.
