How Much Does SEO Cost in Leeds? (2026 Price Guide)

Ask three Leeds agencies what SEO costs and you might hear £400, £1,800 and “it depends”. All three can be honest. They are quoting for three different jobs, which is why SEO cost in Leeds has no single number.

Here is the short version. Most small and medium businesses in Leeds pay between £500 and £2,500 a month for SEO from an agency, and £1,000 to £2,000 is the sweet spot. Local-only work from a freelancer can start nearer £300 to £600. Competitive sectors such as law, finance and e-commerce regularly pass £3,000. These are indicative ranges, drawn from published UK and Leeds pricing guides and the quotes we see.

What does SEO cost in Leeds in 2026?

Expect roughly £300 to £600 a month for a freelancer handling local SEO, £500 to £1,500 for a small agency covering one location, £1,500 to £3,500 for broader Leeds and Yorkshire coverage, and £3,500 or more for national or highly competitive campaigns. One-off audits usually fall between £300 and £1,500.

Published guides agree on the shape if not the exact figures. One UK pricing guide puts typical small-business retainers at £1,000 to £3,000, while another notes prices have climbed since 2024. Most of those guides are written by agencies, so treat every figure, ours included, as a rough guide rather than a rate card.

How do Leeds SEO agencies charge?

Most charge a monthly retainer. Some quote a fixed project fee for an audit or a one-off clean-up, and a minority bill by the hour, usually £60 to £150.

Retainers suit SEO because the work never really finishes. Rankings move, competitors publish, Google changes the rules. A project fee works when you only need a diagnosis and plan you can hand to your own developer. Hourly billing rewards slowness, so we would only use it for small, clearly bounded tasks.

What makes SEO cost more or less?

Six things move the price, and the first matters most.

Competition. Ranking for “emergency plumber Headingley” takes less effort than “commercial solicitor Leeds”. Where established firms have spent years building authority, you pay for the catch-up.

Scope. One service in one area is a modest job. Ten services across fifteen areas is a project with real volume, because each combination deserves its own genuinely useful page.

Starting point. A fast, tidy site with a decent Google Business Profile is a head start. A slow site with duplicate pages and no reviews means the first months go on repairs.

Content. Good pages need someone who understands your trade to write them. Some retainers include a few pieces a month. Many do not.

Links and reputation. Earning mentions from local press, trade bodies and partners takes outreach time, and it is the part cheap packages quietly skip.

Reporting and strategy. A monthly call with someone senior costs more than an automated PDF. It is usually worth more too.

What do you actually get at each budget?

A £500 retainer buys the essentials: Google Business Profile management, review prompts, citation clean-up and a little on-page work for one location. That suits a sole trader in a quiet market.

If you are comparing against a national agency instead, what an SEO agency costs across the UK shows how the figures change.

Double it and the picture changes. At £1,000 to £1,500 you get proper keyword research, technical fixes, a few new or rewritten pages each month and basic link building, which is enough for most Leeds service businesses to see steady movement.

Between £2,000 and £3,500, expect a broader programme with regular content, stronger outreach, conversion work on key pages and a monthly strategy call.

Past £3,500 you are paying for scale. Many locations, many services, heavy content or a competitive national market.

What do SEO quotes often leave out?

Four things catch people out.

Content is the big one. Retainers usually exclude it unless the proposal says otherwise. Developer time is the second. If the audit finds your site needs rebuilding, that is a separate job. Tools and software are sometimes passed on at cost. And paid links or sponsored posts, where used, are generally billed on top.

Ask for a line-by-line list of what is included, and ask what is not.

How can you tell if a Leeds SEO quote is fair?

Compare scope, not price. Two quotes at £800 can be wildly different. One may include four new pages a month and a call. The other may be a template report and a promise.

A fair quote names the pages, tasks and outcomes you will get, how often you will hear from a human, how long the minimum term runs and how you leave if it is not working. It also tells you honestly what it will not do. If a proposal could be sent to any business in the city by changing the name at the top, it probably will be.

Which pricing red flags should you watch for?

Guaranteed page-one rankings top the list. Nobody outside Google can promise that, and Google’s own SEO guidance says as much. Be wary of long lock-in contracts, vague “link packages” with no examples, reports that celebrate impressions while enquiries stay flat, and anyone who will not tell you which tasks they will do.

Our guide to SEO agency red flags goes through the warning signs beyond price, and the question to ask for each.

How much should you spend relative to what a customer is worth?

Work backwards. Picture an electrician in Roundhay whose average job is worth £450, with about 40% left as profit. That is £180 of profit per job. If £1,000 a month brings in three extra jobs, SEO costs £333 per job against £180 of profit, which looks poor in month three. If the same spend brings in nine jobs by month eight, it costs £111 per job and clears the bar comfortably. SEO is slow to start and cheap at scale.

That is why we usually suggest running SEO next to a small paid campaign. Our guide to setting a Google Ads budget covers the other side of that equation, and how long SEO takes to work will help you set honest expectations.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Rarely. Under about £300 a month, the hours on offer are too few to do anything beyond the basics. That can be enough for a single-location trader with an unusually quiet market. It is not enough to win a contested search.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do SEO myself to save money?

Yes, up to a point. Claiming and completing your Business Profile, asking for reviews and writing honest service pages is all within an owner’s reach. An expert earns their fee on the technical fixes and the outreach.

Do I have to sign a 12-month contract?

No. Some agencies ask for six or twelve months because SEO takes time. Rolling monthly terms exist, and they keep the agency honest.

Is local SEO cheaper than national SEO?

Almost always.

What should I ask before I sign?

Who will do the work, what is in and out of scope, how you will measure success in enquiries rather than rankings, and how you can leave. Our SEO service page explains how we answer those, and the same questions apply to us.

If you already have a quote, send it over. We will tell you plainly what it covers and what is missing, whether or not you hire us.
